Magazine Cover Final

Magazine Cover Final

Our final magazine cover came out slightly different to how we wanted it to be but we kept the same sort of ideas. Instead of having them stood up we had them sat down but still taking up the same amount of the frame so they are the focus.
We are happy with our magazine cover as it shows them being happy and similar to how actors are on the covers of magazines such as OK! and Hello, they want to appear to get along and show how much fun they had shooting the film.

Magazine Cover Draft

Magazine Cover Draft

In order to create the magazine cover we used the rule of thirds, we split the page into sections so that we could place things within the focus points that the eyes are naturally drawn too.
We wanted to place their faces in those spaces because we felt that was the most poignant thing on the cover as new actors.
As well as this we needed to incorporate the film titles into the magazine cover as the name of the magazine is already in the usual place.

Film Poster Final

Film Poster Final

Even though we had a solid idea of what we wanted our film poster to be, when we came to shoot it we had some difficulties of taking the picture the exact way we wanted.
However we did not want to give up therefore we took some test shots in the way we had designed and then I decided to experiment and just try other things.
In the end I am really happy with what I have produced, I think that using the desk and playing on the characters has made the cover look different and interesting.

Film Poster Draft

Film Poster Draft

The film poster needed to be something different and interesting in order for it to stand out against other similar ones.
We decided to have the typical features; names; title and tagline, but then we wanted an image that would be slightly different, we knew we didn't want a close up as that was quite stereotypical in films such as Silver Linings Playbook.
This is why we came up with the idea that we've got with Casey pushing Toby away, this is different and also described our film perfectly.

Prop Sourcing

Props Sourcing

The following is a description of the props we will need in our trailer, the necklace is the main one and then the papers that Casey makes for their class project.

Shooting Schedule

Shooting Schedule
Our shooting schedule is below, this was a brief outline of what we were going to shoot on different days. We did this in order to make sure that we got everything filmed by a certain point to ensure that we had enough time to edit and make our trailer correctly.

Shot Test Vlog

Shot Test Vlog

As well as taking stills of our shot tests we also did some in a video format, this gave us the chance to see shots in action with real lighting techniques and just added depth to the shots.

Shot Tests

Shot Tests

These test shots are used in order to make our shot lists and decide how we will shoot each shot. The first is a neutral long shot. It shows us the entire body but not from any angle. Conversations can be shot like this as it allows the audience to view the entire shot.

This shot is a neutral mid shot, it shows us most of her body but allows a closer look at her face. Once again conversations can be shot like this, but these shots are a great way to gage a characters emotions and facial expressions.

This low angle long shot enables the audience to feel under threat from the character, it puts them at an angle where they look larger and intimidating. This is a useful shot in a crime or thriller film however is not seen a lot in rom coms. One reason it may be is if the 'popular girl' was stood over the 'nerd'.

The opposite shot to the previous one would be a high angled long shot, this does the opposite, makes the audience feel strong and empowered. It shows the person in the frame as weak and vulnerable. This is once again not the most used shot in a romantic comedy but could come in handy when showing Casey as vulnerable.

Shot List

Shot List
Below is the original shot list that we created in order to film our trailer, we only set this as a lose plan so we know that it was okay not to follow it completely and to stray from it at times.

It is set out simple and clear for us to follow easily when filming, we have used a list to describe what is in each shot and what type of shot it is. This is meant to decrease time spent filming.

Audience Feedback of Location

The following is the feedback we received from out target audience based upon their thoughts on the locations we have chosen for our films.

Next to each of the charts is the question. We asked 15 people, a mixture of boys and girls in order to get a more accurate view of out target audience showing that we are appealing to all members of our target audience.

As well as asking general questions we also wanted to ask specifically about out

Location Report

Location Report

We have decided to use a typical school location for the development of our film because it suits the genre of film that we are trying to create. This location helps to set the age of the characters, genre of the film and overall stereotypes of the characters that are being portrayed.

Lighting Tests

Lighting Tests

The following are different types of lighting being tested on similar shots.

As a rom com we knew we wanted to have mood lighting using warm colours, this is because we wanted it to look cosy and warm. This would make the film look more inviting and appealing to the audience.

As well as this we wanted to have darker lighting for scenes with intimacy, this is why we chose to look at an inside location with less natural and mostly artificial light.

This final shot is my favourite type of lighting, the fact that it is using white shows the bright coloured clothing and helps make the characters stand out but doesn't flush them out.

User Ratings on IMDB

User Ratings on IMDB

So the following gives us an insight on what aged people watched what type of films. This was all collated in order to help us pinpoint what aged and gender people would be watching our film should be.
Below are a list of films and information about their viewers, groups from under 18 to over 45 and even IMDB staff.

From my findings, it is evident that Females from aged 18-45+ are interested and love romantic comedies compared to Males 18-45+ as they are more of a secondary audience and woman of all ages our the aimed target audience.

Script Final

 Script Final
This is our final version of the script, we have expanded it in order to have dialogue throughout and so that the trailer is more of a journey with insight into the story.

Audience Feedback for Script

Audience feedback for Script:

The following are the results from a face to face questionnaire we have asked a group of 20 people, this was to gain insight into what they thought about our script.

Does it suit the conventional layout of a normal script?
Does the script suit the romantic comedy genre?
Do you like the first draft of the script?

As you can see most of the responses we got were positive and they were happy with the script we have got. This is a good thing as the script is so key and if we get that wrong then the trailer may not land as well as we had hoped.

Script Draft

Script Draft
This is our first draft of our script. We plan on altering it when we begin filming because we understand that not everyone will say the correct lines word for word, also things that we have written may not sound as good as something we think up whilst filming.

Storyboard Animatic Final

Storyboard Animatic Final:

So using our feedback from the people we asked we made some changes to the story board and were able to make it into a short video to show our trailer more clearly.

Audience Feedback for Storyboard

Audience Feedback for Storyboard:

The following is just a group of words that we were given when we asked a group of 30 people in our target audience age category what they thought of our storyboard and pitch idea.

As you can see most of the words we have got are positive, this is a good thing because this means that we have not got as much to approve on. However the negative words and phrases we have got we are going to improve upon.

Storyboard Draft

Storyboard Draft:

This is our storyboard draft, we decided to hand draw it because it was easier to add any details and this way we would make sure that we got everything we needed.

Narrative of Trailer and 5 Key Frames

Narrative of Trailer:

These are the stages of our film, it is done using Todorov's theory, we split the films plot down into 5 sections, this helps us then plan the trailer. for example the restoration step is not going to be featured in the trailer as that will give the plot away.

Stages

Equilibrium
Casey is a nerd, Toby is a jock, two opposites that don’t like each other
Disruption
They are thrown together to work on a class project
Carly (Toby’s Girlfriends) becomes jealous and steals her locket
Realisation
Casey realises she likes Toby but hears him talking about her negatively
Repair
Toby attempts to win Casey back but she doesn’t want to hear it
Restoration
Toby breaks up with Carly and gives Casey her locket back and they end up together

Each stage has been matched to the most appropriate part of our film, this will then help us to determine what will be most important in our trailer.

5 Key Frames:

The 5 key frames are 5 pictures which will feature in our trailer, these are our original ideas of 5 shots we would like to be used in our final piece.

We chose 5 pictures we think describe the plot in short hand, the locket being a focus point and then the characters obviously are mentioned a lot.

Moodboard

Mood Board

Our mood board was fun to make and got us inspired for our film, we knew we wanted it to be neat but still exciting, I started by making a list of all the things that reminded me of romantic comedies as well as actual films. This then meant i had an idea of what would be on the mood board.

As well as items that reminded me of romance I also included fonts and colours because this was a great time to begin further research into the font styles we would be using and the colours that would best suit our film.
The overall look of the mood board is exactly what we wanted and I am happy that it came out how I had planned because now I have a clear cut idea of what our film trailers overall look will be.

Production Logo Final

Production Company Logo

We decided to to make our own production company logo using the traditional camera, however put our own twist on it by making it into a love heart. We then wanted to have the name of the production company in there because we thought that it is an important feature of one. This is why we added it to the centre of the logo so that it is eye catching and can be seen by all.

The final idea for our logo came from making the survey, I thought it would be a good idea to ask our audience because they will be the ones watching the trailer and therefore the logo should play a part in that and should be loved by them as well.
We chose a pink heart because it was the most popular and still followed quite closely to the logo we wanted to create. Overall I am happy with our logo because of the links to our genre and the fact that it is different to most other production logo's that are making films now.

Production Logo Results

Production Logo Results

The following show the answers to the survey I created in order to gain ideas for our logo, we only needed to ask 2 simple questions in order to gage what we should do for our logo to look the best and interest the correct audience.

As you can see this question was answered as we wanted it to be, we wanted to use either a heart shape or a mix, however from the results we can see that no one was interested in the idea of having a mix of shapes as the logo. We decided to go with a heart shape because of how well it was received and the fact that we wanted it to be a love heart as well.

Secondly, we asked what colour they would prefer for the logo to be, our main colour we wanted to use was blue, however we feel that the audience have made a good choice with pink because of the connotations of the colour matching with the romantic comedy genre. As a result of our questionnaire we decided to go with pink because it was the clear favourite amongst the audience and it suits better with our genre.

In conclusion this survey helped us to discover what the audience were interested when it came to colours for our logo, this also helps us because we now know the most popular colours to be used in our other work, for example the magazine, poster and even the colours in our trailer.

Narratives of Trailers and Todorov's Theory

Todorov's Stages

Todorov had a theory that each films plot goes through 5 stages.

1) Equilibrium - where everything is normal and all is well in the story.

2) Disruption - something in the story goes wrong and creates a problem

3) Realisation - the characters realise something has gone wrong/ there is a problem

4) Repair - they tempt to repair the damage done and solve the issue

5) Restoration/New Equilibrium - this may be different to the original and may not always be a 'happy ending' but it will be the new normal

Here are Todorov's theory for 3 Romantic Comedy's trailer vs the actual film as that is my chosen genre.

As you can see it is very uncommon for the trailer to give away the whole story therefor most only include 3-4 stages and never usually the final stage, this is so that it doesn't ruin the film for the audience. however some are different and show some of the ending but not the whole thing, this can include leaving the audience on a cliffhanger to encourage them to go and watch the film.

In terms of my own trailer it has let me understand that i need to have a clear concept of my entire plot before making the trailer so that when I come to making the trailer I can reduce it down into the synopsis for my trailer and only include the important bits.

Final Concept of our Film

Overall Synopsis

The following is a break down of our entire plot, this was needed so that we were all 100% on what our plot was and how we would portray our story.
We broke it down into sections os that it is easier to understand and so that we knew what bits we should include in our trailer.

Although we are only making a trailer, we realised that we should understand what the entire film was going to be about so that we had a good understanding and knowledge of the type of story we were telling.

Trailer Pitches Survey Results

Create your own user feedback survey

In order to understand what our audience were looking for in a future film we thought it was best to give them more freedom in what film genre we created, this is why we came up with 3 different genre ideas in order for them to pick their favourite out of all of them.
We came up with an idea for Horror, Romantic Comedy and Thriller in order to appeal to the biggest target audience.

The most popular pitch comes from the Romantic Comedy genre.
